The usual dose for Sovaldi is one tablet to be taken once daily. They should be swallowed whole with a drink of water and not broken, crushed or chewed. Sovaldi tablets must be taken with food.If sofosbuvir is used on its own there is a high chance that the hepatitis C virus will become resistant to it. Sofosbuvir must be used in combination with other medicines that attack the hepatitis C virus in different ways. This helps to reduce liver damage and improves liver function. This stops the hepatitis C virus from multiplying, which lowers the amount of hepatitis C virus in the liver. Sofosbuvir works by blocking the action of an enzyme called NS5B RNA-dependent RNA polymerase in the hepatitis C virus, which is essential for the virus to multiply. Part of this process involves the virus making copies of its genetic material (RNA and DNA). Once the virus is inside the liver cells it multiplies. Hepatitis C is a virus that infects the liver and leads to liver damage. It is used in combination with other medicines to treat chronic hepatitis C. Sovaldi tablets contain the active ingredient sofosbuvir, which is a type of medicine known as an antiviral. Sovaldi may be used in combination with daclatasvir ( Daklinza), either with or without ribavirin ( Rebetol), or with ribavirin either with or without peginterferon alfa ( ViraferonPeg or Pegasys). Sovaldi may be used in people who have not yet received treatment for their hepatitis C, or for people whose disease has not improved with previous treatment. Treating chronic hepatitis C infections (genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6) in adults with uncomplicated liver disease whose liver is still functioning correctly (compensated liver disease).
